#8. Tusk Love
In May, a crowd of onlookers at the Friedrichsfelde Animal Park in Berlin
watched in horror as an African elephant named Pori appeared first to stomp
on her 250 lb. newborn and then try to drown him in a pond. Although
zookeepers characterized the incident as rough play, they were concerned
enough about Pori's behavior — she trampled her previous newborn to death in
2005 — to distract her with apples and other food so they could pull the
baby out of the water by his trunk. Mother and son were reunited after he
was given a clean bill of health.
